The article analyzes the essays NS Leskov "Holy Saturday in a prison", "Behind the gates of the prison," says the living conditions of the prisoners in the prison of St. Petersburg, approved by the social orientation of early journalism writer. Article allows a better understanding of the problems troubling N.Leskova at the beginning of his journalistic work, see the distinctive style of the writer, already manifested in this period.
