VODUN CULT OF CHAMBA IN THE HISTORY OF WEST AFRICA

Medushevsky Nikolay Andreevich  (Doctor of Political Science, Professor of the Department of Modern East and Africa of the Russian State University for the Humanities; Associate Professor of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.)

This article is devoted to the Chamba cult, which arose in the 1960s in Togo and spread throughout the Golden World. The cult is an interpretation of a mystical traditional religion based on and associated with the belief in spiritual ancestors who were slaves or slave owners. Within the framework of the cult, there is a sacred understanding of slavery as a historical phenomenon that greatly influenced the development of the region in the 17th - 19th centuries. At the same time, the article notes the low level of awareness of the local population about the slave-owning period and inattention to places of historical memory, the transition from the slave trade: in fact, the sacralization of history transfers it from the space of discourse to the sphere of religious and mystical knowledge. The article analyzes in detail the prerequisites for the emergence of the cult, as well as the cult itself, its attributes and mechanisms of implementation.

Keywords:Chamba, slavery, Vodun, crisis cult, West Africa
