The research is aimed at a comprehensive analysis of the system of word formation of the Russian language. The main focus is on the classification of word-formation models, categories, patterns and sequences. The main goal is to structure and examine in detail the fundamental elements that form the word-formation apparatus of the language. The fundamental units were identified and classified as derivational base, morpheme, word formation pair, chain, paradigm and nest. The most important categories are considered as method, type, and lexical meaning. Special attention is paid to the most productive models in modern Russian as suffixation, prefixation and root addition. The series of word formation as an element of the whole system are considered.
