This article is devoted to the geographical names of China, which include the lexeme "river". The choice of the topic is not accidental, because it is known that the most significant objects for the ancestors were rivers. It was in the river basins that the foundations of spiritual and material culture arose. The article presents the history of the origin of the words 川, 江, 河, and shows their use in geographical names. In our opinion, the linguistic description of the toponymic system of modern China is of decisive importance for domestic sinology. The purpose of this study is to pose problems and present general questions of the origin of Chinese toponyms with the lexeme "river". The main method of linguistic description, synonymy, is the basis of our work.
