The article examines various aspects of the use of artificial intelligence in education. The approaches to the definition of artificial intelligence are considered, its ideological and technological prerequisites are outlined, and the theories of "strong" and "weak" artificial intelligence are characterized. The ways of using computer technologies representing artificial intelligence in education are studied: adaptive learning, educational chatbots, automation of educational process administration, proctoring and others. The authors pose a problematic question about the degree of radical transformations in education under the influence of innovative technologies and analyze the main directions of ongoing changes: virtualization, transition to e-education, blurring of the concepts of "academic" and "extracurricular" time, the use of new teaching methods, changing the role and functionality of teachers, requirements for students in the educational process. Not only the positive effects of using artificial intelligence are noted, but also the challenges that the teaching community is currently facing.
