This article is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of a military coup as a form of change of power in a political crisis. The authors address the issue of identification of this phenomenon, its structural analysis and the reasons (context) that contribute to the formation of conditions for the military to come to power. The study is based on the authors' appeal to the role of the armed forces, which, given the weakness of civilian institutions of power, take on political functions, covering up their participation in politics with the need to ensure security and social order. The study is based on a number of fundamental works by domestic and foreign authors devoted to various forms of violent change of power. The authors of the article, in support of their conclusions, turn to specific examples of modern military coups in developing countries.
