THE EXPRESSION OF DURATION AND MULTIPLICITY OF ACTION: A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF ITS STUDY IN RUSSIAN AND CHINESE LINGUISTICS

This article presents a systematic review of scholarly approaches to the expression of duration and multiplicity of action in the Russian and Chinese linguistic traditions. The paper sequentially analyzes the formation of aspectological theories in each tradition and then summarizes the methodology for their comparison. It is emphasized that the fundamental typological contrast between Russian morphological aspect and the lexico-syntactic means of expressing aspect in Chinese necessitates a functional-semantic approach to their comparison. The article is addressed to specialists in the fields of aspectology, linguistic typology, and comparative linguistics.
