PAUSAL DIVISION OF SPEECH IN ARABIC DIALECTS

Such a phenomenon as the pausal form of a word, thoroughly described by grammarians of the classical period, has not yet received detailed coverage in the spoken languages of Arabic countries. The difficulty of interpreting the nature of the minimal unit of the prosodic level of Arabic, the harf, can be considered one of the reasons for this scientific lacuna. The collection of data on the pronunciation features of some Arabic colloquial languages and their analysis, as well as comparison with the materials dealing with the pausal mechanism in the literary language, permits us to form a clear picture of pausal forms of words in Arabic dialects. The research allowed us to conclude that dialects have both the ways of forming the pausal form of a word, as described by the Arabic grammatical tradition and typical for the literary language (iskān, badal, naql, ḥadhf), and unique phonetic phenomena specific to spoken languages of certain regions (glottalization of final consonants, qualitative and quantitative changes in final vowels). Many processes in dialects that differ from the norms of the literary language described by grammarians have their roots in the ancient language, so their further study can help in its reconstruction, as well as in drawing a more detailed picture of the prosodic level of the languages belonging to the Semitic family. Moreover, this research permits us to get the whole picture of pausal process in Arabic language.
