USING VIRTUAL REALITY TO SIMULATE CROSS-CULTURAL SITUATIONS: INCREASING EMPATHY AND CULTURAL AWARENESS IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of virtual reality technologies for the development of empathic abilities and cultural awareness of students in the process of learning foreign languages through the creation of immersive intercultural educational environments. The article presents the results of a pedagogical experiment involving 184 students of non-linguistic faculties of Russian universities, aimed at a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of VR technologies and traditional methods of teaching intercultural communication. The research is based on a comprehensive methodology that includes psychometric testing using an adapted Davis scale, specialized cultural awareness questionnaires, structured interviews, and expert assessments by teachers. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by the development of an innovative classification of VR scenarios of intercultural interaction, differentiating business, everyday and conflict types of situations, as well as the creation of a comprehensive methodology for assessing the impact of virtual reality on the formation of intercultural competence, integrating traditional psychometric tools with biometric measurements and psycholinguistic testing. As a result of empirical research, a statistically significant superiority of VR technologies over traditional teaching methods has been established, expressed in an increase in empathic abilities by 46.9% in the experimental group versus 12.5% in the control group, as well as in an improvement in cultural awareness from 62.3% to 84.7% of correct answers in specialized tests. The practical significance of the research is determined by the possibility of using the developed VR scenarios and methodological recommendations to create innovative educational programs for language education in the higher school system.
