The development of historiosophical thought in Ancient Rus dates back to the 10th-11th centuries – a time of profound socio-political and cultural changes in the lives of the Eastern Slavs, caused by the formation of the ancient Russian state – Kievan Rus, the influence of Byzantine and Bulgarian cultures, the emergence of Slavic writing and the adoption of Christianity by Rus. Hilarion’s historiosophical concept is original and distinctive, it has striking differences both from the historiosophical teaching of Blessed Augustine that was dominant in Western Europe and from the theory of “God’s executions” that was widespread in the Orthodox East. The historiosophical analysis of the “Word on Law and Grace” reveals a rich context of ideas related to the moral, spiritual and cultural identity of Russia. The work is not just a historical document, but also a philosophical treatise that encourages reflection on man’s place in the world and his heartfelt connection with the divine.
