‘THE BIRTH OF A NATION’: VENEZUELA IN THE MIRROR OF POLITICAL TOPONYMY

The article is devoted to the evolution of Venezuela's name in connection with changes in the political situation within and around it – first as a Spanish colony, then as a liberated territory, and finally as an independent state. This determines the structure of the article, which is divided thematically and chronologically into two parts: the first deals with the administrative and territorial status of Venezuela in the 16th–18th centuries, while the second deals with the peculiarities of its political and legal situation in the 19th–20th centuries.
