The author comprehends the main provisions of ontology - being, essence, essences, existence - in their scientific problems. It was possible to expand the understanding of ontology due to the inclusion in the illuminated sphere of ideas of the majority of scientists involved in various aspects of metaphysics - being and movement, structure and properties of matter, the whole and the individual, forms of being, space and time. The genesis of ontology as a field of philosophical knowledge is described without any ideological bias. The evolution of philosophical views on these structural questions of being in different cultural and historical periods is presented - antiquity, the Middle Ages, the New Age (Enlightenment, the period of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, the 20th century). The issue of material (materialism) and spiritual (idealism) forms of being, essential and existential, the influence of the properties of matter on human life are considered separately. The main discoveries of philosophy and natural science knowledge, which were the basis of one or another ontological concept, are covered. Literary and artistic works are presented as reflections of the achievements of ontological knowledge and their creative rethinking.
