Monasticism in Russia has always been more than just a religious practice – it is a whole special spiritual and social institution that has played a colossal role in the life of society for centuries. In the Russian Empire, monasteries acted not only as centers of spiritual life, but also as the most important centers of culture, education and social support. They performed many functions: spiritual education of the population; preservation and dissemination of Orthodox traditions; charity and care; colonization of new territories; chronicle writing. Monks, by their personal example, exerted a moral influence on people, thereby convincing them to follow the evangelical path. An interesting aspect was the economic activity of monasteries. They owned land, were engaged in agriculture, crafts, and had significant economic privileges. By the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, the role of monasteries began to transform. The events of 1917 almost completely destroyed the monastic system.
