THE KOREAN COMMUNITY IN SAMARA DURING THE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR

Jin S.   (Graduate student, The Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IRH RAS), Moscow, Russia)

This article presents an initial academic exploration of the Korean diaspora residing in the European part of Russia, specifically in the city of Samara, based on documents from the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF) dated 1918. Although such information is virtually absent from official population censuses, the available materials indicate that Koreans with Japanese citizenship organized a collective structure and conducted formal negotiations with local authorities, including KOMUCH. These documents offer detailed insight into the organization’s structure, forms of internal self-governance, and interaction with external administrative bodies, providing a new perspective on the political agency and geographical scope of Korean migrants' activities during the Russian Civil War. The purpose of this study is to provide an academic introduction to this corpus of sources and to establish a foundation for further expanding the geographical and source-based dimensions of research on the history of Koreans in Russia.

Keywords:migration; Koreans; Samara; diaspora; Russian Civil War.
