The article is devoted to the analysis of an epistolary source on the history of key Russian quasi-diplomatic institutions in the Syrian-Palestinian region in the second half of the 1870s - 1880s, which has not been previously used in scientific research. The correspondence of the creator of «Russian Palestine», the head of the Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem Antonin (Kapustin) with the founder of the Orthodox Palestine Society V.N. Khitrovo contains valuable, sometimes unique information. The documents indicate the existing connection between the struggle to preserve the Russian Mission in Jerusalem and the idea of creating the Palestine Society in St. Petersburg, highlight the formation of scientific tasks in the field of Palestinian studies in Russia, the interaction of Russian representatives with the Jerusalem Patriarchate, give an idea of the bureaucratic instruments of management of Russian church-diplomatic institutions in the Ottoman Empire. Finally, they significantly enrich the biographical information about the authors of the correspondence.
