Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common diseases with a continuing upward trend in incidence, characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. Systemic inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of COPD and may also predispose to metabolic disorders, in particular, metabolic syndrome (MS). Systemic inflammation, adipokine dysregulation, smoking, and low physical activity may contribute to the association between MS and COPD. Abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, and hypertension are the most common components of MS found in patients with COPD. This combination may negatively affect COPD outcomes, cardiovascular risk, and quality of life. This review discusses the relationships between COPD and MS.
