The article is devoted to the history of the interpretation of the term «justice» within the history of European philosophy. The author presents a retrospective of the doctrine of justice in the early Christian patristics, where justice was considered as one of the fundamental moral virtues. Later in the history of European moral philosophy, morality as an autonomous sphere of human life was reduced to the idea of justice, regarded as a condition of the common good. After migrating from the area of social and legal relations to the area of moral categories, the concept of justice regained its rightful place in the field of personal ethics and declared its universal significance through all the political history of the Modern Era.
