The article examines a little-explored aspect of the life of the great French thinker. It is shown that Rousseau's views on the chess game demonstrate both his philosophical concepts and personality traits. The topic of chess raised in his «Confession» is analyzed. Contradictions between the ideas of the french philosopher and his real line of behavior are revealed.
