SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF VOLUNTEERS ENGAGED IN HELPING PEOPLE IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS

Over the past 15 years, according to the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion, the percentage of volunteer activity has increased significantly. Volunteering, as one of the forms of philanthropy and pro-social activity, as well as the best platform for solving problems significant to the people, has become an urgent phenomenon that is gaining popularity among Russian citizens, which generally contributes to the improvement and well-being of a democratic society. These trends indicate the humanization of society, its achievement of spiritual, moral and psychological well-being, socio-economic prosperity in general, as well as the harmonization of interpersonal relations of the studied category of people both in a socially significant prosocial field and in intra-family relationships in particular. In particular, volunteer work has a positive impact on the personal growth of each individual who engages in gratuitous assistance – it leads to a positive change in his communicative consciousness, develops empathy and promotes self-actualization. People who provide assistance to people in difficult life situations have certain socio-psychological characteristics that are most often characteristic of extroverts. Moreover, they show flexibility, lack of self-esteem, reliability, responsibility, have faith in the expediency of their own actions and expect success from their implementation.
