The article claims that mentoring in modern universities should take into account the special features of subjects taught. It considers the evolutionary processes in mentoring and examples of the best foreign practices in the field, looks at types of mentoring, its tasks and the ways to put in action peer mentoring for academic staff. The authors also focus on the mentor’s contribution to the quicker process of organizational, corporate and professional adaptation of novice university teachers. The theoretical reasoning is supported with the description of running mentoring programs when teaching ESP (English for Special Purposes) at the Department of English for Professional Communication in the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation.
