the article deals with the function of metaphor as a stylistic trope in political discourse. The emphasis is placed on the analysis of materials of Russian and English-language mass media (mass media). Metaphor, having a high cognitive and emotional load, is used to form and transform the perception of reality, create vivid pictures and manage public opinion. The study is based on a sample of 10 metaphors evenly distributed between the Russian-language and English-language sources. They were selected on the basis of considering their expressiveness, frequency and contextual relevance.
The application of the methods of critical discourse analysis and cognitive-metaphorical analysis allowed us to identify the ideological functions of the metaphors, cultural differences in their use and their manipulative potential. In Russian-language sources, metaphors often emphasize threats, conflicts, and internal tensions, whereas English-language sources focus on global influence, progress, and leadership. It has been shown that such differences reflect the peculiarities of the perception of political reality and political construction strategies in different countries reality and strategies of its constructions in different cultural and media contexts.
The results of the study confirm that metaphors not only simplify complex political processes, but also serve as a tool for directing cognitive and emotional reactions of the audience, forming stable ideological narratives. The paper emphasizes the significance of analyzing metaphors in modern media for the purpose of understanding the manipulative mechanisms of political discourse.
Keywords:metaphor, political discourse, manipulation, mass media, cognitive analysis, cultural differences, ideology, media, perception, public opinion.
