The article deals with the features of translating phraseological units of B.L. Pasternak's prose from Russian into English using phraseological equivalents.
Based on the phraseological units of B.L. Pasternak's prose works, it was noted that several thematic groups of phraseological units are distinguished, united by their basic meaning and the situation in which they are used. We distinguish three main groups of phraseological units equivalents that characterize human emotions, their properties and qualities, as well as phenomena and situations.
It was established that the translation is carried out using both absolute and relative phraseological equivalents. It is noted that the translation of Russian phraseological units by English absolute equivalents maximally ensures the adequacy of the translation, while the relative phraseological equivalents of the English language completely coincide with the original phraseological units in lexical and stylistic meaning, the underlying image, but differ in syntactic or morphological parameters.
When dividing phraseological equivalents into absolute and relative, it is necessary to emphasize that often the differences in the use of verbal and nominal forms of prepositions are a consequence of the action of the compared languages internal laws.
The use of phraseological equivalents significantly contributes to achieving the adequacy of the translation of Russian phraseological units into English.
