Introduction: A historical and pedagogical analysis of the leading trends in the development of speech therapy in the Northern Black Sea region during 1950-1991 was carried out. The scientific heritage of domestic scientists devoted to the study of the theoretical and methodological foundations of the correction of speech disorders is analyzed. The main advanced ideas and progressive achievements of scientists in this field of knowledge are identified. The variety of socio-political, socio-economic and organizational pedagogical factors of that time is characterized, which influenced the conditions of research and practical activity in the field of speech therapy and determined the features of the process of its further development as a separate pedagogical branch of knowledge.
Materials and methods: Analytical-logical, historical-systemic methods and a method of comparative analysis of the obtained data were used, which made it possible to reflect a holistic picture of the development of the theoretical foundations of speech therapy in the Northern Black Sea region in a certain period. During the research, other scientific methods were also used, in particular, explanation, search, synthesis, comparison, etc.
Results: The scientific novelty of the research results obtained lies in the specification and addition of historical and pedagogical facts that characterize the basic patterns and specifics of scientific research by scientists, the activities of government institutions that conducted scientific research in the field of special education, in particular, speech therapy. Little-known archival documents related to the development of the theoretical and practical foundations of speech therapy in the Northern Black Sea region have been introduced into scientific circulation.
Discussion and Conclusions: An analysis of the process of development of speech therapy in this territory during this period indicates that its object, subject and methods were formed on the basis of the accumulation of experience and advances in medicine and pedagogy, which ultimately led to the holistic separation of speech therapy into a separate field of knowledge.
