THE FIGURE OF RUSSIAN MEDIEVAL ICONOGRAPHER IN THE CONCEPT OF EASTERN CHRISTIAN PATRITIC HOLISM

Sokolov I. A.  (Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University)

This article is an attempt to consider the theological foundations for understanding the figure of a Russian medieval iconographer through the prism of Eastern Christian phenomenological, psychosomatic and teleological holism. The article examines the reflection of patristic holism in texts devoted to the personality and work of Alipy Pechersky, Theophanes the Greek, and Andrei Rublev. The main sources used are medieval texts of didactic and hagiographic literature and the additional sources are late liturgical literature of the 17th–20th centuries. The analysis demonstrates the ideas of patristic holism, articulated in the works of the Holy Fathers of the 4th–7th centuries, not only remain relevant, but also form the basis for the formation of ideas about the iconographer as the ideal of integrity and harmony of the human personality and about icon painting as communion with God.

Keywords:phenomenological holism, psychosomatic holism, teleological holism, deification, the mind, the heart, icon painting, iconographer
